Rino Burkhardt graduated from the University of Zurich and received his doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the same University. He is an EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) certified specialist in periodontology and received his Masters degree from the Medical Faculty of the University of Berne (MAS in Periodontology).

Currently, he runs a private clinic in Zurich, limited to periodontology and implantology, and has a part-time university teaching position at the University of Zurich. Besides clinical work and teaching, he is actively involved in research projects at the University of Zurich, focused on mucosal wound healing and development of surgical technical skills.

He is the vice president of the Clinical Research Foundation for the Promotion of Oral Health and head of the Research Group on Oral Soft Tissue Biology & Wound Healing. In 2017, the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP) appointed him a scientific member. Currently, he is the president of the Swiss Society of Implantology (SGI-SSIO) and board member of the scientific committee of the Swiss Dental Association (SSO). He is an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED) and the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) and reviewer of several professional journals (e.g. Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research and others).
